We can offer a firm of accountants, or a group of firms in an area, or a group of charity trustees, high quality bespoke training in your own offices or premises arranged by you.
The courses can cover any element of charity law and accounting and can be designed for trustees, senior staff, junior staff or all levels of staff.
Usually, they would be courses from 10 am to 4pm with a break for lunch, and could cover the main areas of charity law and charity governance, tax and trading by charities, charity accounting principles, and external scrutiny including independent examination requirements and procedures. They could also include topical issues, or recent legislative changes.
Half day courses would usually be 9.30 to 12.30 or 2pm to 3pm, and evening courses would be by arrangement.
The speaker is Peter Brown FCCA,DChA,FCIE - he is a registered auditor and holds the ICAEW Diploma in Charity Accounting. His firm holds the prestigious ACCA Quality Assured Mark. His firm has been a paperless office since January 2000.
Trustees have a primary role in law to ensure that their charity is well managed, that assets are secure, and that accounts are prepared which fully comply with the law.
A recent report suggested that of the accounts filed with the Charity Comission by qualified accountants 45% were materially defective. We are surprised that the figure is as low as 45%, based on our own observations.
Charity trustees have the ultimatre responsibility for these defective accounts, not the accountants.
Charity accounting and charity governance are complex and have many unfamiliar concepts, and it is necessary to spend time and resources on keeping abreast of developments. There is a legal duty for trustees of charities to keep abreast of charity law and practice.
